About Stratum

Built by an owner, inside a working firm.

Stratum wasn’t dreamed up in a software company. It was built one rule at a time, inside a civil engineering firm, by the person who had to make payroll, answer the client calls and sign the numbers.

My story

I was the glue. Then I built something better.

For years I ran my firm the way most owners do. Time in one tool, projects in a spreadsheet, billing in QuickBooks, and the real picture in my head. I found out how a month went three weeks after it ended. When a client called, I had to go find out where their project stood. I was always chasing something: updates from my own team so I could answer the client, the city for review comments, the client for the survey we needed, timecards so we could bill.

I tried the software that was out there. Some of it was built for contractors, some for hundred-person firms with an IT department, and none of it was built for the way a firm like mine actually works: milestones, rounds of review, agencies that take their time, and people who’d rather be doing the work than logging it.

So I started building Stratum for my own firm. Every rule in it exists because something went wrong once. And it gave me my life back. I know how my people are doing. I know our clients are being taken care of. I don’t have to chase anyone to find out, so I spend my time on the work that actually moves the firm forward.

I want that for every owner who’s ever reconciled spreadsheets on a Sunday night.
